With the "Sex and the
City" movie shooting on the streets of New York, it's no surprise the film
has become catnip for the city's fashion, high-society, publishing and tabloid
realms.
And that's resulted in seemingly endless leaks of photos, gossip and possible
key plot points. The parade of paparazzi shots and "if A, then therefore B" plot
deductions have created a rubber-neck fascination not seen since "The Devil Wears
Prada."
New Line, while limiting official set access, has done little to shield the
production from looky-loos. But as with the shoot of the final scene of "The Sopranos," which became
a New York media obsession five months before the finale aired,
hyperknowledgeable fans -- many of whom oversee celebrity media coverage -- have
strung together several plot points.
Among the possible scoops: Carrie marries Big, and Charlotte finally has a
baby. And could there be a flashback?
Gawker.com waggishly anointed the production "The Most Important Movie Ever
Shot in New York," running a dozen fan-on-the-street updates in the past month.
Ditto the tabs, which have festooned their pages with giddy headlines and
"candid" shots of Chris
Noth, Sarah Jessica Parker and
the gals.
Some of the tips are obviously coming from fashion designers angling for
coverage.
But some appear to be coming from the production itself, even though New Line
is officially mum.
As far as managing the proliferation of photos, film vets who have been
through similar highly conspicuous location shoots say there are two basic
options to manage the keen interest: Strictly limit photos to only a handful of
official shots, or flood the market by allowing unfettered paparazzi.
In media-centric New York, things seem to have defaulted to the latter
option.
