Chinanews, Shanghai, Oct. 16 – A
college student who happened to learn from an online article that a pregnant
woman whose blood type belonged to the very rare AB Rh negative blood needed to
take blood transfusion traveled 2,000 kilometers from Hangzhou to Liping County
in Guizhou to donate her blood to the woman, the Oriental Morning Post
reported.
Since the 20-year-old female student was only 1.55 meters high and
weighed less than 44 kilograms, she fainted for a while during the blood
transfusion. However, when she regained consciousness, she asked the doctor to
continue the blood transfusion process. After she donated her blood to the
woman, the student refused to reveal her identity to the public. However, a
staff member at Liping Publicity Department disclosed the issue on local media
under a pseudonym.
The girl, Mao Chenbing, was a junior student at the Art Design Vocational
School under the China Academy of Art. The school awarded Mao for her brave act.
On the evening of September 14, Mao happened to read a message sent by
one of her online friends named “the life of the death sea” saying that a
pregnant woman in the Liping People's Hospital had suffered from massive
haemorrhage because of ectopic pregnancy. The woman was in a coma and badly
needed a blood transfusion. Her blood type was the AB Rh negative blood…
“After reading the article, my first response was that I needed to help
her,” Mao recalled afterwards. Having decided to travel to Guizhou, she told her
plan to two of her closest friends and borrowed some money from them.
She first took a train to Shanghai then flew to Guiyang. After arriving
at Guiyang, she spent ten hours on the bus to arrive at Liping People's Hospital
on the evening of September 16.
After confirming that her blood type matched that of the pregnant woman,
the doctor at Liping People's Hospital suggested that Mao donate 200 ml of blood
first. However, Mao insisted on donating 400 ml of blood at a time.
After donating 100 ml of her blood, Mao nearly fainted. The doctor
suspended the process and gave Mao some sugar water to drink. After resting for
an hour, Mao asked the doctor to continue the blood transfusion process.
However, after donating another 240 ml of blood, Mao fainted again. When she
regained her consciousness, she once again asked the doctor to go on with the
transfusion process.
All the blood donated by Mao was finally transfused into the body of Yang
Changhua, the pregnant woman. Now, Yang has recovered from her illness. She is
able to do farm work now.
